'Why can't I?' launched Florida's first girls-duals wrestling team
Florida has launched its first all-girls duals wrestling team, Team Barracuda, thanks to the persistence of 14-year-old Lily Calzadilla. The team, which practices at Jensen Beach High School, has grown from three athletes to about 70, including six official girls team members. The initiative aims to promote female participation in a sport traditionally dominated by males.
- ▪Team Barracuda Wrestling Club was founded in 2006 by Coach Tom McMath.
- ▪The girls team has six official members, with additional girls participating informally.
- ▪The team practices year-round, focusing on folkstyle wrestling in the fall and winter, and international styles in the spring.
