AI Shi(f)ts the Cost to the Reader
AI can generate lengthy, polished messages in seconds, but humans still bear the cost of reading and validating them. This practice has spread across collaboration tools and ticketing systems, often leading to bias and reduced critical discussion. Communities are emerging to discourage the overuse of AI‑generated text in professional communication.
- ▪AI can produce extensive, professional‑sounding text quickly, yet the responsibility to read and verify it remains with human recipients.
- ▪Such AI‑generated messages are common in platforms like Slack, Teams, Jira, and GitHub, where they can obscure decision‑making and create anchoring bias.
- ▪Engineers sometimes use AI to draft status updates or tickets, but they must still review the content before sending to avoid errors.
- ▪Critics have formed groups and websites to call out the practice, labeling it a workplace faux pas and encouraging more concise communication.
- ▪The article argues that overly prescriptive AI content can short‑circuit self‑organizing team dynamics and limit exploration of alternative solutions.

AI shi(f)ts the cost to the readerAndrew Loutfi · Jul 20, 2026 · 5 min readThis morning, I used a frontier model to execute this prompt: Using absurd corporate bloat, hot air, and word chaining, write a message I'll send to my fiancée notifying them that I am taking a shit upstairs. A few seconds later, a highly polished, very professional-sounding 1,349-word message painted my phone screen. It came complete with phrases like "Upstairs Restroom Center of Excellence," "Air Quality Stabilization & Environmental Recovery Program," and "fully sunset this brownfield deployment." I sent that, along with an addendum titled "Courtesy Flush Update," and one more once the "release" had concluded. I then resumed washing dishes.
