Apple is finally building the AI Photo editor that Google and Samsung have had for years
Apple is developing new AI-powered photo editing tools called Extend, Enhance, and Reframe for iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27, aiming to catch up with features Google and Samsung have offered for years. These on-device tools will let users expand image backgrounds, automatically improve photo quality, and adjust the perspective of spatial photos taken with Vision Pro. However, internal testing has shown inconsistent results, and the features may be delayed or scaled back if performance doesn't improve. The tools are expected to be showcased at WWDC 2026 and released in September.
- ▪Apple's new 'Apple Intelligence Tools' in Photos will include Extend, Enhance, and Reframe, powered by on-device AI.
- ▪Extend generates new background content to expand a photo’s frame, while Enhance automatically improves color, lighting, and image quality with one tap.
- ▪Reframe allows users to change the viewing angle of 3D spatial photos after they are taken, primarily for Vision Pro content.
- ▪Features are currently in development and may be delayed if they don't show significant improvement before Apple's September launch event.
- ▪Unlike Google and Samsung, Apple currently only offers the limited Clean Up AI feature in its Photos app.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, in his latest report, claims that iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 will come with a dedicated “Apple Intelligence Tools” section inside the Photos editing interface. The “Apple Intelligence Tools” section will include three new AI-powered photo-editing features: Extend, Enhance, and Reframe. Before we begin with what the features actually do, all of them will run entirely on-device, and, in a typical Apple fashion, complete their edits in seconds.
