Clever database, but can it run Doom?
Developer Lukas Vogel has released SQLDoom, a port of the classic game Doom that runs entirely within the CedarDB database using SQL for both game logic and rendering. This project addresses previous criticisms of his earlier DOOMQL iteration by implementing accurate BSP-tree traversal to replicate the original visual style. The demonstration highlights the advanced capabilities of compiling database systems, proving that complex real-time graphics can be processed via SQL queries.
- ▪Lukas Vogel ported Doom's game logic and renderer to SQL to run on the CedarDB database.
- ▪The new port uses BSP-tree traversal instead of raycasting to achieve visual accuracy comparable to the original game.
- ▪Python is used only for timing, keyboard input, and bitmap display, while all rendering and game loops are handled by SQL.
- ▪The project serves as a technical demonstration of CedarDB's ability to compile complex queries into machine code.
- ▪Vogel confirmed that the game is playable on a standard laptop and supports online multiplayer deathmatch.
