Digital Research's GEM opens a new window on Linux
Slovenian developer Tomaž Štih has created a Linux port of Digital Research's GEM, a pioneering graphical environment originally designed for PC compatibles and the Atari ST. This project, derived from the FreeGEM and OpenGEM source codes, allows the retro desktop to run directly on Linux via framebuffer or within an SDL2-based emulator window. The release revives interest in classic GUI technologies and offers a secure, optimized alternative to modern display server complexities.
