England's schools are getting better at mopping up cyber incidents
A survey by Ofqual indicates that English secondary schools are experiencing fewer cybersecurity incidents and faster recovery times compared to previous years. While phishing remains the most common threat, the proportion of incidents causing critical damage has decreased significantly. However, there is a notable lack of clarity regarding cybersecurity responsibilities, with many teachers unaware of specific security improvements or lacking effective training.
- ▪Twenty-seven percent of schools reported a cybersecurity incident in the 2025/26 academic year, down from 29 percent the previous year.
- ▪Sixty-six percent of affected schools reported immediate recovery, an increase from 55 percent in the prior academic year.
- ▪Phishing was the most frequently reported type of incident, followed by data protection breaches, hacking, and ransomware.
- ▪Forty-six percent of teachers identified the IT team as primarily responsible for cybersecurity, while 40 percent believed responsibility was shared among all staff.
- ▪Approximately one-third of teachers reported receiving no cybersecurity training or being unsure if they had received it during the past year.
