In the Grande Borne neighborhood of Grigny (Essonne department), during a heatwave, July 8, 2026. CAMILLE MILLERAND/DIVERGENCE FOR LE MONDE The French summer seems locked in a never-ending climate crisis. Fires, heatwaves and droughts have followed one another relentlessly. As flames ravage the Gironde, near the Arcachon Bay, Landes and Var (southwestern France), the country is already bracing for a fourth heatwave expected by around Wednesday, July 29. "It is inevitable. All the climate models agree; we are heading for it," said climate scientist Christophe Cassou, research director (CNRS) at the Ecole normale supérieure, who does not hide his "anxiety." The intensity and duration of this wave remains to be determined, but projections already suggest a severe and prolonged episode.
