Google ‘AI contribution pilot’ tests paying websites when they’re used in AI results
Google is testing a new 'AI contribution pilot' that directly pays websites when their content is used to generate AI Overviews and other AI search results. The program currently involves dozens of small and mid-sized publishers and extends beyond just news organizations to include a wider range of web content. This initiative aims to address the decline in direct traffic to websites caused by the shift toward AI-generated search answers.

- ▪The pilot is primarily testing with small and mid-sized publishers and covers content types far beyond news.
- ▪Publishers participating in the pilot have described the provided information as basic but view the initiative as a meaningful precedent.
- ▪Google previously announced a commercial partnership program with major news publishers in late 2025, but this new pilot has a much wider scope.
- ▪A panel in Google Search Console now displays payout figures for participating sites whose content is used in AI products.
