GrayKey might have a workaround for Apple's iPhone reboot protection
Magnet Forensics claims its GrayKey Preserve tool can bypass Apple's new inactivity reboot protection on iPhones. This feature allows law enforcement to keep devices in a more accessible state for data extraction. Security researchers speculate the workaround may involve manipulating the device's clock or disabling data expiration tasks.
- ▪Apple introduced an inactivity reboot feature in iOS 18.1 that restarts iPhones after 72 hours without an unlock to restrict access to encryption keys.
- ▪Magnet Forensics released GrayKey Preserve and Evidence Preservation Mode to keep seized iPhones in the After First Unlock state and prevent data from expiring.
- ▪The tools isolate the phone by disabling cellular, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi connections after initial access to preserve sensitive information.
- ▪Security researcher Jiska Classen suggests the workaround might function through clock manipulation or by disabling tasks that set data to expire.

A law enforcement tool vendor may have found a way to keep the device in that state. Magnet Forensics claims its tools preserve iPhone data that Apple's security features would otherwise make harder to access. The tools could give police more time to extract sensitive information from seized devices. In iOS 18.1, Apple introduced a new privacy feature, a sort of inactivity reboot.
