These questions stem from Gallup’s 2025 update on Americans’ views of economic systems, which found 81% viewing free enterprise positively, compared with 54% for capitalism and 39% for socialism. To better understand the reasoning behind Americans’ views, Gallup conducted a separate survey asking Americans to say, in their own words, what they like and dislike about each system. The sample was randomly divided three ways, so each respondent was only asked about the pros and cons of one system.
