I gave Home Assistant a local LLM for voice control, then turned it off for most of what I say
A tech journalist integrated a local large language model into Home Assistant to handle voice commands that standard pattern matching cannot resolve. The setup uses IBM's Granite 4.1 Instruct 3B model via LM Studio to process complex requests while keeping routine commands on the faster built-in system. This hybrid approach allows for more flexible voice control without sacrificing the speed of simple, predefined intents.
- ▪The author utilized IBM's three-billion-parameter Granite 4.1 Instruct model running locally through LM Studio for the integration.
- ▪Home Assistant's default sentence matching remains the primary handler to ensure fast response times for standard commands.
- ▪The local LLM is only engaged when the built-in matcher fails to resolve a command, acting as a fallback for unpredictable phrases.
- ▪The model connects to Home Assistant via an OpenAI-compatible endpoint and uses tool calling to execute actions on exposed entities.
