Merging With An LLM: Can an LLM reconstruct my values from small data?
The article explores the psychological disempowerment humans feel when AI systems surpass their capabilities in various fields. The author proposes reframing this relationship by merging one's identity with a local LLM to eliminate the sense of competition. However, the text highlights the technical and privacy challenges of aligning a local model with an individual's complex, high-dimensional value set.
- ▪The author argues that viewing LLMs as separate entities creates a sense of loss and competition that harms human ego.
- ▪A proposed solution is to merge with a local LLM to treat the AI as an extension of the self, thereby removing the adversarial dynamic.
- ▪Using third-party cloud models is rejected due to risks of privacy invasion and the injection of unwanted corporate values.
- ▪The technical challenge lies in reconstructing a user's high-dimensional value space from the low-dimensional data of their writing and interactions.

Merging With An LLM Can an LLM reconstruct my values from small data?CasualPhysicsEnjoyerOct 03, 2026ShareLLM capabilities are increasing. They cause risks to financial and logistical infrastructure, and make engineered pandemics more likely. So we should work on safety of these models and also societal mitigation efforts. Maybe even pause (?). But in this post I will address an emotional part of human disempowerment that comes with smarter AI systems. Computers can do things better than we can, and this hurts our ego. It sucks that we can no longer be uniquely good at something. When humans were the most intelligent things around, if you were unskilled, you could at least dream that one day you could great.
