More than 1,000 Muslims participated in special Bakrid prayers at Nagore Beach near Nagore in Nagapattinam district on Friday.The prayers were held as part of Bakrid celebrations being observed in Saudi Arabia. Men, women and children gathered at the beach venue and exchanged festival greetings after the special prayers. Organisers said prayers were also offered for world peace and for an end to tensions between Iran and the United States.Speaking on the occasion, Seyyad Ali of Nagore said Bakrid symbolised sacrifice and sharing, with meat from sacrificial animals traditionally distributed among relatives and the poor. Similar special Bakrid prayers were also held in various parts of Nagapattinam district, including Thittacheri, Manjakollai and Vedaranyam.
