La radiación infrarroja tiene longitudes de onda superiores a las del color rojo del espectro visible. Todos los cuerpos por encima del cero absoluto de temperatura emiten radiación infrarroja. Por tanto, si tuviéramos ojos sensibles al infrarrojo veríamos en una habitación oscura. Esto le ocurre, por ejemplo, a la serpiente pitón. Posee unos cuantos ojos, solo sensibles al infrarrojo, capaces de detectar variaciones de temperatura de 0,05ºC producidos por una presa a una distancia de 5 metros.
