It stood in the light with its head turned, looking at the car the way an animal looks at weather. Her hand went to the horn and rested on it. After a while the coyote crossed into the reeds. The message had come at 02:14 and it had not come from a person. Come to the building. At 04:00 I will make an announcement. You should not hear it at the same time as everyone else. Nine years she had run oversight on it. In nine years it had never contacted her first. That was the whole architecture. It answered. It never began. The 101 was empty in the way it only got between two and four, after the freight and before the commute.
