Study shows AI is as good as human tutoring for GRE learning gains
A new study titled StudentBench demonstrates that AI tutoring produces learning gains on the GRE that are statistically equivalent to those achieved through expert human tutoring. The research involved over 2,300 participants and found that in five of seven GRE domains, the best-performing AI tutor actually surpassed human tutors in average performance. Additionally, the study highlights that one specific AI tutor achieved comparable results at a cost 918 times lower than human instruction.
- ▪The study utilized the StudentBench platform to analyze over 175,000 student-AI messages and data from 2,383 human participants.
- ▪AI tutoring was found to be statistically equivalent to expert human tutoring for GRE learning gains with a p-value of .015.
- ▪In five out of seven GRE domains, the top-performing AI tutor outperformed the human tutor on average.
- ▪One AI tutor achieved equivalent learning gains at a cost of USD 0.0052 per percentage point gained, compared to USD 4.81 for human tutoring.
- ▪Faster AI replies in Quantitative GRE sessions were correlated with increased student engagement and larger learning gains.
