As I mentioned in my last post, around the year 2000 I took an AI course at the University of Guelph, and the thing I remember most is Lisp. Lots of Lisp, in the dark CIS lab. Thinking back on that course, I remember also building little AI agents, as part of an end-of-term project. The “agents” we built were rule-following programs searching state spaces with an A-star pathfinding algorithm. And looking back, we had the shape of the thing right: perceive, reason, act, repeat. We were twenty-five years early, and missing one ingredient.
