The King had ordered the construction of a vast fleet, an early Royal Navy. The project went so well that part of it went rogue and ended up raiding the south coast itself, while the rest was destroyed trying to stop it. Thorkell’s army landed unopposed in Kent, where local nobles immediately paid off the marauding Vikings with silver and pointed them toward London. Lesser kings might have panicked or resorted to rash schemes, but Æthelred had a brilliant plan.
