FLIP, short for Floating Instrument Platform, was a 355-foot ship that would flood its stern and pitch backward 90 degrees until it floated straight up and down. The front 55 feet stayed above water; the other 300 feet were suspended in deep, calm water, which made the platform almost immune to passing waves. The idea came from a Navy mop. Scripps director Fred Spiess recalled a colleague noticing how steadily a mop floated upright in choppy water and wondering whether a ship standing on its tail might do the same.
