Jeffries was upset that the court had ended racial gerrymandering designed to guarantee the election of non-white (and largely Democratic) House members. It was as if Jackie Robinson were to join a protest calling for the return of race-based discrimination in baseball. Robinson played his first year in the Negro League before becoming the first African-American player in the Major Leagues when he took the field for the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947.
