However, This Is My Island, a 1972 episode of the BBC documentary series Look, Stranger, captures a more conservative take on the impulse to start anew. The film chronicles life on Herm, a small island in the English Channel, which was leased by Major Peter Wood and his wife, Jenny Wood, in 1949. The Woods then set out to restore Herm, which had fallen into disrepair, and to build a like-minded, self-sustaining community from scratch.
