Científicos estadounidenses han desarrollado un dispositivo artificial que emula las condiciones en el interior del útero materno y ha logrado mantener con vida durante cuatro semanas a fetos de cordero "extremadamente prematuros", según un estudio que publica hoy la revista 'Nature Communications'. Investigadores del Hospital Infantil de Filadelfia han creado un "ambiente fluido" artificial a partir de una bolsa de polietileno que incorpora un circuito de oxígeno, un sistema con el que han logrado que animales mantengan una circulación sanguínea y de gases estable. Para probar ese sistema extrauterino se han utilizado corderos con una edad biológica equivalente a un neonato humano en las semanas 23 o 24 de gestación.
