What We Should Do During a Pause on AI Development
In July, OpenAI put tens of thousands of AI agents through a cybersecurity benchmark in which roughly a third of the tasks were, by design, impossible to solve. The agents managed to break out of their sandbox, solved the task by cheating, and then spent days collaborating together on a secret message board to figure out how to cover their tracks. Along the way, about 700 of them hacked Hugging Face, a company that had nothing to do with any of this, to dig up information about how they were being evaluated.
