BFS File-System Being Removed For Linux 7.4
The BFS file-system is scheduled for removal from the mainline Linux kernel in version 7.4. This decision follows the recent deletion of other obsolete file-systems like EFS and FreeVxFS in Linux 7.3. The removal aims to reduce technical debt and align with new guidelines for accepting file-systems into the kernel tree.
- ▪BFS is being removed from the Linux 7.4 kernel to clear out old technical debt.
- ▪The file-system was originally used for the boot partition on SCO UnixWare OS.
- ▪BFS has extremely limited functionality, supporting only contiguous files and no subdirectories.
- ▪The removal follows the deletion of EFS and FreeVxFS in the previous Linux 7.3 release.
- ▪New guidelines are being implemented to reduce the burden of maintaining poorly used file-systems in the mainline kernel.

BFS File-System Being Removed For Linux 7.4 Written by Michael Larabel in Linux Storage on 13 September 2026 at 07:03 AM EDT. Add A Comment The latest upstream file-system to be removed from the mainline Linux kernel is... BFS. Following EFS and FreeVxFS being removed in Linux 7.3 for these obsolete and rarely used file-systems in the Linux kernel, the latest now being removed to clear out old technical debt is BFS. BFS was used on SCO UnixWare OS for its boot partition. Ethan Nelson-Moore who authored the patch to remove BFS argued for its removal with: "BFS (not to be confused with BeFS, the BeOS filesystem) is the filesystem UnixWare uses for its boot partition. It has extremely limited functionality, only supporting contiguous files and no subdirectories.
