La luna, uno de los 150 objetos que orbitan los planetas del sistema solar, se formó hace unos 4.500 millones de años. Es el quinto satélite natural más grande del sistema solar, con un diámetro que es tres veces la longitud del río Tajo. Refleja parte de la luz que le llega del sol y, por su cercanía con la Tierra, es el objeto del cielo nocturno más brillante. Su núcleo es rico en hierro y su corteza está formada por minerales que contienen, mayoritariamente, magnesio, oxígeno y silicio. Actualmente, su superficie está cubierta de polvo y rocas, pero tuvo actividad geológica y contuvo un mar de magma.
