Question about character models in modern games

Out of curiosity, why is it in modern games, so many character models look so... moist, greasy or reflective? It's gotta be my #1 complaint, hate talking to an NPC where their skin looks like they've been dunked in a vat of oil and have a reflective surface like they're partially chrome. Really takes me out of it.
