Rise in arrival of jackfruits to Salem market has brought down prices to ₹38-₹40 a kg at wholesale rate. Jackfruit season, which normally begins in March and ends in July, sees peak harvest in different parts of Tamil Nadu, including Cuddalore, Pudukkottai, Kolli Hills in Namakkal, Karumandurai and Vellimalai in Salem district. Most of the fruits coming to Salem market are from these districts as well as Kerala.Umar, a wholesale trader at Sathram in Shevapet, said 90% of jackfruits coming to Salem market are from Panruti in Cuddalore district, and substantial volume from Pudukkottai district is sent to Erode, Tiruppur and Coimbatore districts.
